FATAL BUSH ACCIDENTS
MOKAI MAN KILLED A fatal accident occurred at Mokai on Thursday, February 11, resulting in the death of Mr Te Kohera Paerata, aged 22, single, son of Mr William Paerata. Mr Paerata and a companion were engaged in bush-felling, and had just aropped a large matai tree. This fell cleanly and without trouble of any sort, but the vibration set up by its fall caused a dead tree some distanee behind the men to snap off some eight feet above the ground. As it fell deceased was struck a glancing blow on the head, and died without recovering consciousness. Col. J. D. Swan, Coroner, and Constable E. H. Rowlands, proceeded to the scene and an inquest was- held, the verdict being one of accidental death. Mr Te Kohera Paerata was a great-grandson of the well-known chief of Ngati-Raukawa and Ngati-te-Kohera, Hitiri Te Paerata. Hitiri's father, the old chief Te Paerata, was killed at the Battle of Orakau in 1864, and Hitiri and his sister Ahumai were the only members of the family to survive the battle.
