Empty Tanks in Taupo, With the continuance of the long dry spell a great many Taupo residents have run short of water, and are having to buy supplies. This is pumped from the river at the Wharf, and carted in tanks fitted on motor trucks, which have been kept busy for days past. rjc Night Flyers Over Taupo. A number of Taupo residents were wak.en.ed by the noise of airplane engines between twelve thirty and one a.m. on Tuesday February 9. The aircraft was an R.N.Z.A.F. Bristol freighter on a cross-country navigational flight. It left Whenuapai airport earlier in the evening, flew to Cape Reinga at the northern tip of the island, and then down to Tauranga and on to Napier. There the plane turned and headed back to Whenuapai. * * * Golf Club Meeting. The Annual General Meeting of the Taupo Golf Club is to be held at the Clubhouse on Wednesday next, February 24, at 8 p.m. The Secretary, Miss J. A. Branson, notifies that nominations for officers for the ensuing year must be in the hands of the Secretary by 8 p.m. on Sunday, February 21. The recent change of weekly closing day for shops from Thursday to Saturday is reflected in the fact that the question as to whether men's golf matches will be played on Saturdays or Sundays is to be discussed.

Bitumix Worker BurtiedL An employee of Bitumix Ltd., Mr Dave Shapleski, aged 31, married, was severely burned on Thursday, February 11, when a quantity of hot bitumen was splashed on his legs and arms. The accident occurred on the Taupo-Rotorua Mairi Highway, about two miles north of Wairakei, where road sealing work is in progress. The injured man was brought into Taupo and after receiving medical attention was taken to Rotorua Hospital in the Taupo St. John Ambulance Association's ambulance, % $ % Landing Reserve Braittage, In a letter before the Borough Council's meeting on February 3, Mr B. R. Williamson, Barbourmaster, enquired as to the responsibility for maintenance of the stormwater drain along the right-hand side of the road past the Folice Station to the Landing Reserve, The Mayor stated that the Council received a grant of £20 per aiinum for maintenance of the road from the Internal Affairs Departmenh The Town Clerk reported that the drain had been repaired that day. Councillors referred to the drain constructed toward the end of last year by the Ministry of Works across the Reserve to the Lake, which now took the water from the road drain mentioned. This water formerly drained to the river and it was stated that the new drain was dangerous and undesirable, and that the drainage should be diverted back to the river as before. It was decided to take up this matter with the Ministry of Works.
