LARY-IN-WAITING SURPRISES PORTER
"You are lucky to be in the Queen's room," a porter at the Hamilton Hotel told a young woman guest a few days after the Royal couple's visit to Hamilton. He proceeded to tell the young woman "all about the Queen" and to enlarge on aspects of her visit to Hamilton. But his enthusiasm in discoursing on the Queen was exceeded by his surprise when ten minutes or so later he was acquaint'ed with the identity of the young woman — Lady Alice Egerton, lady-in-waiting to the Queen. Lady Alice was enroute from Auckland to rejoin the Royal Party from which she had been separated because of an illness. Her doctor advised two hours' rest at Hamilton before she continued her journey with other members of the Royal household and the suite which had been occupied by the Queen was made available for her use. The porter is a professional glass blower. He blew a kiwi in glass and presented it to Lady Alice before her departure. She wrapped it in cottonwool and took it carefully away with her.
