This photograph of one of the early buildings of the Spa Hotel is thought to date back to the 1880's. The picturesque valley in which the hotel is situated, with its warm creek and thermal springs, has long been known as The Spa. Its original Maori name, however, is Tapapakuao. Mr. J. W. Birnie, licensee of the Spa Hotel, who kindly lent the photograph, is unaware of the identity of the photographer.
