BOROUGH BREVITIES
Bang went a Rumour! At the last Borough Council meeting Cr. Lewis stated that a rumour had been going the rounds to the effect that a large dwelling being built had received a building permit for an estimated value of £2000 only. Was this correet? The Town Clerk reported that the permit in question showed an estimated value of £3500. A Councillor: — 'Another Taupo rumour exploded!' ❖ ❖ ❖ A.C. Bath. The Borough Council decided at its monthly meeting to alter the hours during which the A.C. Bath is open. It is at present open from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. Notice of motion was given for the next meeting to alter the opening hour to 7 a.m. A recent fortnight's check had shown that during that time only two people visited the Baths before 7 a.m. A street light will be placed at the Bath parking area as soon as municipal power is available at the Baths. ❖ ❖ ❖ A Petition. A petition being circulated by Mr W. A. Harding, caretaker at the A. C. Baths, addressed to the Boy Scout Commissioner, Rotorua, asking that a new Scout Association be set up in Taupo to replace the existing one, was before the Borough Council at its recent meeting with a request for the Council's support for the petition. It was decided that the matter was not one concerning the Council and the request was declined. ❖ ❖ ❖ Motutere Domain. The Borough Council's monthly meeting appointed Cr. J. D. Swan as the Council representative on the East Taupo Domains Board, which was set up by the Government last August to administer the Motutere Bay Domain Camp. The former Council representative did not stand for election to the Council, but it is understood that the Board is to ask for his re-appoint-ment by the Government. * * * Votes of Thanks. At the last Council meeting the Town Clerk showed a beautifully engrossed copy of the prayer with which meetings of the Council are opened. It had been done for the Council by Mrs Avis Acres and was much admired by councillors. A vote of thanks to Mrs Acres was passed by the Council. A similar vote was accorded Mr W. T. Irvine, retiring member of the previous Council and Town Board, for his services. * * * Shop Site Near Sehool. Referring to the Town Planning Scheme Cr. J. M. Stanley said he noted that no shop site was provided near the block of land recently purchased on Waiariki Road (Spa Road) for the District High School. Cr. Lewis thought a shop site near a school was essential. Cr. Young expressed the opinion that shops were not required near a school, but Cr. Stanley pointed out that shops for the sale of school requisites were found near most large schools. Cr. Young pointed out that such matters could be brought up by way of objection to the Plan when the three months period was advertised.
