Eight Shops In New Block
READY FOR HOLIDAY TRADE COMPACT SHOPPING CENTRE
The biggest block of shops in 1 Taupo, that erected in Tongariro i Street for Taupo Properties Ltd., ' is now occupied and, with the modernised grocery of Taupo Stores Ltd., forms a compact shopping centre between the Horomatangi Street corner and the Bank 'of New Zealand, opposite the Post Office. The contract was let to Messrs. W. L. Atherfold Ltd., of Napier, and work was commenced immediately after Easter last, the building being of concrete block and reinforced pillar construction. Next to the self-serviee grocery of Taupo Stores Ltd., on the corner Mr J. A. Fenton has established Taupo's first watchmaking and jewellery business. Mr Fenton was in business in Taumarunui for 8 years f ollowing his return f rom service overseas. He learnt the trade in Te Kuiti where his father founded a business now carried on by Mr Fenton's brother. Watson's Furnishers was established by Mrs Jack Watson nearly two years ago near the north end of Tongariro Street. McCleary, who has com- ! menced business as a hairdresser ) and tobacconist, was in business f with his father in Waipawa from ) 1946, when he returned from active ^ service in the Middle Eeast. He )
has furnished his premises with modern equipment.
Mr Bob Ying is occupymg one oi the shops with a fruiterer's and p-eengrocer's business, in addition to the similar one which he has carried on at the north end of Tongariro Street since 1951. For twenty-one years prior to that he conducted a fruiterer's business in Newton, Auckland. Mr I. T. Logan is extending his fishing rod, rifle repair and light engineering business to cover the supply of all types of sports goods suitable for Taupo, where he has been in business since June 1947. Mr Gordon Fraser, chemist, established his business, the Taupo Drug Store^ in Roberts Street in September 1950, after twenty-eight years in business in Patea, and has now moved to the new block. Hours of business for Sundays and holidays are still to be arranged with the Department of Labour. Mr E. T. Smith took over the business of the Taupo Meat Supply | on December 1st 1946. His new premises are equipped with a modern forced draught refrigerator, and have been described as one of the most modern butcher's shops in New Zealand. The men's wear business of Alan I McLean Ltd., was founded in 1949. In its new premises it provides a modern display of a wide range of | all types of men's clothing. The enterprise shown by Taupo j Properties Ltd., in the establishment of this up-to-date shopping building is another example of the 'business community's faith in the ( future of Taupo.
