TONGARIRO ST. PARKING
LIMIT 30 MINUTES The Borough Foreman, Mr W. Amer, in his monthly report to the Council, referred to the matter of parking of veh'icles in Tongariro Street. The Council's staff had commenced marking the street for angle parking and for pedestrian crossings. Business owners had complained that some cars were being parked on the business side of the street (eastern) for hours at a time, which did not leave parking space for the shopping public. Often visitors who would otherwise stop went on to Rotorua and business was thus lost. The Foreman suggested that the western or Domain side of Tongariro Street be left available for all day parking, while parking on the shopping or eastern side of the street be limitedl to 30 minutes. He also recommended | that all timber lorries and heavy trucks be made to park in the side streets, as at present they were doing damage to the main street, which was very soft when hot. These suggestions were in line with practice in other boroughs. The Foreman's report was considered by the Works Committee at a meetirig held on November 16, when it was decided to recommend that the time limit for the parking on the shopping (eastern) side of Tongariro Street be 30 minutes, and that the suggestion as to timber lorries and heavy trucks being required to park in the side streets off Tongariro Street be adopted. The Committee's recommendation was approved by the Council meeting on November 18.
