HIGH SCHOOL AND WANDERERS TIE

The two cricket matches played at the Domain last week-end produced thrilling finishes. The match on Saturday between High School and Wanderers resulted in a tie, each side scoring 144, whilst on Sundey the Taupo Club won against the visiting Minginui Club by 1 wicket. Tomorrow the School plays another match against the Taupo Club in preparation for their matches against Mangakino and Raurimu in December. The first of two matches between the Golf Club and Taupo will take place on the Domain on Sunday. The School's opening batsmen, Mr K. Graham and Mr P. Hoggard were unable to take. any liberties with the Wanderers attack, the brunt of whieh was borne by Delaney and Courteney who bowled nearly 30 overs between them. Painstakingly the batsmen put on 97 invaluable runs for the 1st wicket. Four wickets then fell very quickly, but K. Rameka with a six and a four, Mr Bogue, who collected two sixes, and Alan Reading who played creditable innings which included two fours, brought the score to 144. Wanderers were left under two hours to catch their opponents, but after losing two early wickets. the middle batsmen carried the score along until L. Dance joined F. McKean for the last wicket when 15 runs were required for victory. Whilst Dance played judiciously for three singles Frank McKean batted steadily for a further succession of singles until with the scores level Reo Rameka obtained his fourth wicket by bowling him. This was the first tie played in Taupo for many years, certainly none are recorded amongst the existing records of the Club which date back to 1948. The closest match on record appears to be the game with National Park played on January 16th 1949 when Taupo was defeated by the narrow margin of three runs. Reo Rameka, with his curious 'softball pitching' style of run up to the wicket, was the best of the School bowlers. Denis Clark was steady though inclined to pay too little attention to keeping a good length. Mr T. Curham was not easy to score from except in one over when he gave away 4 fours to Courteney. Scores: — Taupo School, 1st innings, 144 — K. Graham 44, P. Hoggard 50, K. Rameka 10, K. Bogue 15, A. Reading 13, O. Delaney 5 for 58, R. Courteney 4 for 13, F. McKean 1 for 6. United-Wanderers, 144— A. Dance 22, R. Bredenbeck 25, R. Mclsaac 30, Courteney 34, F. McKean 11, R. Rameka 4 for 44, T. Curham 4 for 49, D. Clark 1 for 31, B. Isabeth 1 for 17. Taupo v. Minginui Owing to pressure of space the report of th match Taupo v. Minginui has been held over and will appear in next week's issue.
