PREVENT DROWNING CAMPAIGN
NEW RESUSCITATION METHOD With the advent of summer the need for "water wisdom" on the part of holiday makers should be emphasised. In the five-year period from 1948 to 1952, the number of drownings in New Zealand was over half of the number of fatalities in road accidents. In that period, 664 persons were drowned, as against 1186 road fatalities. These figures are taken from a survey compiled for the National Committee of Swimming and Life Saving by Mr N. A. Ingram, Wellington. From November 1, 1952, to April 30, 1953, 65 persons lost their lives by drowning in New Zealand. The greatest number of drownings (20) occurred in January, and the least j (4) in March. The Royal Life Saving Society has' adopted the Holger Nielsen method of resuscitation to replace the long - recognised Schaefer method. Several thousand pamphlets, called "Be Water Wise," will soon be distributed throughout the Dominion by the Prevent Drowning Campaign Committee. The Holger Nielsen resuscitation method is briefly described and illustrated in thesei pa'mphlets. The Prevent Drowning Campaign Committee, with headquarters in Wellington, is closely associated with various Dominion swimming organisations, and is assisted * by Education, Physical Education Health and Broadcasting services and officials. Inquiries about pamphlets, posters, or other matters concern|ng swimming safety may be addressed to Box 8007, Wellington.
