TAUPO IS GROWING
NEW BUILDINGS AND MORE BUSINESSES Following the recent completion of Messrs. Coley and Son's concrete shop building in Tongariro Street, occupied by the Christopher Robin Tea Rooms, Messrs Wong and Sefton's electrical business, and Miss B. Coley, specialising in children's clothing, two more modern concrete buildings have now been completed in the same street. The block of eight shops between the Busy Corner Store and the Bank of New Zealand, built by Messrs. Atherfield Ltd., of Napier, for Taupo Properties Ltd., is finished except for some final interior fittings. Mr E. T. Smith (Taupo Meat Supply) has already commenced business in the n£w building, as also have Mr I. T. Logan, sports goods specialist, and Messrs. Alan McLean Ltd., men's outfitters. The remaining five shops in this building will shortly be occupied by Mr Gordon Fraser, Taupo Drug Store; Mr Bob Ying, fruiterer and greengrocer; Mr J. McCleary, hairdresser and tobacconist; Watson's Furnishers and Mr J. Fenton, watchmaker and jeweller (formerly of Taumarunui). Story's Building The concrete building which Messrs A. Coley and Son have had under construction for Mr J. E. Story, on the corner of Tongariro Street and Paora Hape Street, only awaits some interior fittings. The corner shop is to be opened shortly as a grocery store by Mr J. McDonald, and will be operated on ihe
self-service system. Mr M. Tierney is entering business as a butcher in one! of the remaining shops, while the third will be occupied by Mr Dick Fraser, as a men's outfitter. Another new business opened recently is Mr A. E. Booth's Taupo Meat Mart, in Tongariro Street premises between Casson and Co's. store and the Punch and Judy Child's Wear Shop. The premises in Roberts Street at present occupied by Mr Gordon Fraser, chemist are to be occupied by Mr E. Arbuekle, formerly of Papatoetoe, when Mr Fraser moves to Tongariro Street. Mr Arbuckle will open a grocery store on self-service lines. New Garage Mr E. Darlington has recently erected a concrete garage for Messrs. Mitchell Duncum Ltd. automotive engineers, on the corner of Ruapehu Street and Paora Hape Street, next to Mr W. L. FulljaHies' premises. The building, which comprises workshop and office prepletion of a number of internal mises, has an area of 2000 sq. feet, and it is expected to have the business in operation shortly on completion of a number of internaal fittings. On the corner of Ruapehu Street and Horomatangi Street, next to the Bruce Bennett Plumbing Company's new premises, Messrs L. and R. Davis have recently completed Mr George Marlow's building. A concrete structure of modern type, it will shortly be opened as an up-to-date dry cleaning business, the final details of installation of mach inery and equipment being now well in hand. New Construction Type. A building in a type of construction new to Taupo is an iron and steel store some sixty feet by twenty feet erected by Mr W. L. Fulljames at his premises in Ruapehu Street. The building is of the well-known Andac Uni-span type, which combines all the advantages of welded and pre-fabricated types of steel construction. All parts are supplied ready to erect, in sections
of convenient handling size, and being bolted together may be altered at any time, or even removed to another site, without in any way damaging the materials. Mr Fulljames will use the building to expand his present concrete goods business to cover the supply of a complete range of all builders' hardware and requisites. Two new ferr-concrete shop buildings are in course of erection in Tuwharetoa Street. Mr J. E. Skeen is havinig) a two-storied building built by Mr Alan Rose to provide a new and second-hand furniture show-room and shop on the ground floor, with two offices above. Messrs A. Coley and Son are building three lock-up shops for Mr G. F. Tabernacle, which will be occupied respectively by Mrs Tabernacle (knitting to order and knitted and woollen goods), Mrs Mika and Mr R. G. Clark.
