The above picture of the well-known cave at Whakamoenga Point, about five miles from Taupo, is from a photograph kindly lent by Mr J. W. Birnie, and probably taken in the 1880's. The left-hand figure, wearing white duck trousers, is thought to be probably Mr Dan Ferney who was an early boat owner at Taupo. He had sailing boats engaged in the Taupo-Tokaanu freight service, and later owned and was master of the S.S. Tauhara.
