TAUPO CRICKET CLUB

REVIEW OF LAST SEASON Only even matches and one trial game were played by the Taupo Crieket Club last season, though many more were arranged and later cancelled beeause of the weather, lack of transport or shortage of visiting players. On game was played away, the second match of the season against Kaingaroa which was abandoned after 10 overs with the home side's score at 50 for three wickets. In general Taupo bowling was good, but batting proved deplorably weak. Collett, who had been the strength of Taupo crcket for several seasons with both bat and ball, failed to strike form except against the Visitors, when he scored a splendid 90. Games against Rotorua XI and National Park, the latter originally intended to be played for the Lett Cup, were spoilt by atrocious weather. The only match won was against the Taupo Golf Club, when the Cricketers were fortunate enough to obtain the wicket of Collett, playing for the Golfers, for a reasonable score. Kaingaroa won handsomely in the return game and a fairly strong Visitors team dealt with Taupo bowling severely in one of the most pleasant games the Club had played. Reporoa also won after Taupo had dismissed them cheaply, the local team incomprehensibly collapsing. The only other game played was a scratch match between teams led by Collett and Acres, won comfortably by Collett's XI. The averages showed the paucity of the batting, Collett with 225 runs averaged 32.14; Sunnex, thanks to an excellent innings of 57 against Collett's XI, averaged 20.66 in three innings; and W. J. McKean,' who was in great form in the Golf Club match, totalled 107 runs for an average of 17.83. No one else could boast a double figure average. In the bowling table P. McKean was on top with four wickets for an average of 11.25, Forster's seven cost him 12.43 each and W. J. McKean 's 12 averaged 14.16. Woodward and Macken took 8 and 6 wickets respectively for averages of 15 and 16, whilst Collett's 13 cost 17.46 each. Nq less than 33 players batted in the eight games and 22 of these took turns with the ball. Twenty-five catches were taken in these games. Collett, F. McKean, Woodward and Sunnex were the leaders in this department with three catches each.
