MACKAY CUP MATCH

COLLEGE OLD BOYS WIN An exciting match was seen at Taupo on Sunday, September 20th, when College Old Boys defeated the United team by 9 to 6, and won the Mackay Cup. The United team led until the last 15 minutes of the game, during which the College Old Boys scored their three tries. United looked likely winners during the first half, but sound tackiing by the College backs steadied their pace and spoilt their scoring chances. On the wings College played J. Flight, usually No. 8 forward, and A. Tahau, emergency back, both of whom were outstanding. Flight scored two of his team's three tries and was the.surprise of the match. At half for College, T. Mihinui played outstanding football as usual, M. Mihinui being also prominent. The three College tries were solo efforts. The first came from a scrum when T. Mihinui worked the blind to send J. Flight on a 25 yard dash to score in the corner. Shortly after, the forwards took the ball down field, B. Maniapoto picking up and with a long pass sending H. Maniapoto down the line for the second try. The third try came from a 50 yard dash by J. Flight, who again scored in the corner. For United, tries were scored by S. Habib and J. Rakei. Neither side managed to convert their tries.
