Our picture, from a photograph supplied by Mr G. P. Reid, of Taupo, shows the village of Opepe in 1870. At that time it was an Armed Constabulary post, which was established following the Taupo Campaign against Te Kooti This campaign was preceded by Te Kooti's attack on a small party of Bay of Plenty Cavalry at Opepe in June 1869, and ended with the defeat of Te Kooti's force at. Te Porere, near the spot where the Wanganui River crosses the Tu-rangi-National Park highway. An A.C. post was established about the same time at Taupo, then known as Tapuaeharuru, a redoubt being built overlooking the Waikato River, immediately north of the present Police Station residence. Later a hotel was established at Opepe, but all trace of the village has long since disappeared.
