SMITH SHIELD MATCH When the Tokoroa Golf Club's team visited Taupo in May, to play the first of two matches for the Smith Shield, the Taupo Club scored 26 points to Tokoroa's 6 so that when the Taupo team played the second match on Sunday, September 6th. on the new Tokoroa Course, they had a very good lead. This they managed to hold, winning the Shield by 35 points to 28. Results were as follows (Taupo names first). Graham and Rameka lost to Whineray ahd Cornes; Brown and Young lost to Cameron and Smith; Cheal and Miles lost to Whetu and Storer; Collett and Woodward halved with Ward and Robinson; Kerr and Ryan won from Holford and Kobold; Price and Pearse lost to Thomas and Dickenson; Miss Branson and Mrs Hullten halved with Mrs Kirkman and Mrs Boone; Mrs Colbeck and Mrs Vedder lost to Mrs Robinson and Mrs Smith; Mrs Douglas and Mrs Young^ won from Mrs Dickenson and Mrs Rugg. In the singles matches Graham defeated Whineray; Rameka lost to Cornes; Brown lost to Cameron; Young lost to Smith; Cheal defeated Whetu; Miles defeated Storer; Collett lost to Ward; Woodward defeated Robinson; Kerr lost to Holford; Ryan lost to» Kobold; Price lost to Thomas; Pearse halved with Dickenson; Miss Brandon defeated Mrs Kirkman; Mrs Hullten lost to Mrs Boone; Mrs Colbeck lost to Mrs Robinson; Mrs Vedder lost to Mrs Smith; Mrs Douglas lost to Mrs Dickenson; Mrs Young lost to Mrs Rugg. On Sunday, September 13th, the men will play the 5th round of the President's Trophy. The members of the Ladies' Club were pleased to have with them, on Thursday, August 27th, Mrs L. Curtis, chairwoman of the executive of the Ladies' Golf Union, and the following Thursday they received a visit from Mrs D. Wilson, who represents the South Auckland Division on the Executive of the L.G.U. The ladies willingly gave up the weekly match, to listen to a most interesting talk given by Mrs Wilson, on the handicapping system, rules of golf, and many other matters of interest. An attractive afternoon tea was served, and Mrs Wilson was thanked for the interest she is taking in the Club. Another visitor the members were glad to welcome was Mrs M. Bush, who was a member for some years, but now lives near Thames. The ladies who failed to qualify in the championship are playing a match of- their own, and in the first round, Mrs O. Wright defeated Mrs E. Irving at the 19th. On September 10th the ladies will play a Senior and Junior Stableford Bogey. Work is progressing on the course, and No. 4 tee has been turfed since our last report, and turfing of No 3 tee is in hand.
