MUNICIPAL NOTES
Basketball. A letter from the secretary of the Basketball Association enquiring as to the matter of provision of basketball courts was deferred to the Works Committee. Truck for Town Board. The meeting authorised the purchase for the Board of a Ford Thames truck, to cover the Board's requirements in the matter of transport of materials, tools and workmen. 24 Hour Phone Serviee. The matter of a continuous telephone serviee in Taupo was mentioned at the Town Board's meeting on August 19th, during discussion of a letter re postal services from the Businessmen's Association. Mr C. Vedder stated that the Association were taking the matter up, and from information to hand it was believed probable that a 24 hour serviee would be obtained. Complaint re Rates. At its recent meeting the Town Board had before it a letter frofti Dr. T. W. J. Johnson, who wrote with regard to the rise in rates payable by him, following the recent revision of the Valuation RolL and asking whether the Board could not allow some rebate off the amount payable. The Town Clerk stated that the property comprised nine sections, the rates on which totalled £41. The Clerk was instructed to reply that it was not within the Board's powers to allow deduction from rates payable. Municipal Motor Camp. The Town Board decided at its last meeting to open the municipal Motor Camp, at the Old Orchard site, throughout the year. Hitherto the camp, formerly situated in the Domain, has been open during the summer season only. It was decided also to revise the fees charged, the basic charge for camp or caravan sites to be 5/- per night or 30/- per week, with. lower charges for sites for "pup" tents and other smailer types of camp. Proposed Loan. The Town Board decided at the monthly meeting that steps be taken to seek permission from the Loans Board to raise a loan totalling £10,000. Half of this amount is to finance erection of two dwellings for Board staff, and half to bridge the gap between the anticipated final cost of the Memorial Hall, including its furnishing, and the amount derived from the Memorial Hall Fund and Government subsidy.
