PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS
FOOTBALL AND BASKETBALL A successful Primary Schools Field Day was held at Taupo on Thursday of last week, when in addition to the Taupo Sehool teams there were visiting' basketball and football teams from Waitahanui, Oruanui and Maroa. Basketball Results The basketball teams taking part were Taupo A, Taupo ^ B, Maroa, 1 .Waitahanui and Oruanui. Taupo B surprised spectators with their good positional play and nppy handling, tRana Baggs being particularly promSnent. Taupo A was rather disappointing, the forwards not keeping up ihe good play evident with centres and defence. For Maroa, Dulcie Seymour a,nd Erina Murphy showed how a pair of wTell-matched forwards should opera te. Unfortunately Dulcie Seymour will not be available for the representative team travelling to Rotorua on August 8th. Praise is due to the young players in the Oruanui, Maroa and Waitahanui teams who did their best against heavier and more experienced opponents. Results were as follows: Maroa v. Taupo B, 6 — 8; Waitahanui v. Taupo, 'A, 0 — 4; Oruanui v. Maroa, 0 — 10; Waitahanui v. Taupo B, 1 — 4; Maroa v. Taupo A, 0 — 5; Oruanui v. Taupo B, 0- — 11; Taupo A v. Taupo B, 5 — 3; Oruanui v. Waitahanui. 0 — 8; Maroa v. Waitahanui. 8 — 1; Oruanui v. Taupo A, 0 — 5. Taupo A won the day »* with Taupo B as runi\ers-up. At the end a Possible To Probable match was played, the tollowing players being chosen as probable representatives to compete in Rotorua: Forwards: Erina Murphy [(Maroa ), Materoa Whiu (Taupo A), [Waana Whiu and Elaine Darlington '(Taupo BTf eentres: Keren Reid, KateRameka (Taupo A), Rana Baggs !B)> Margaret Blake (Waitahanui). Defence: Jennifer Pitiroi, Maadi Hough, Ada Paul (Taupo A), May jBlvers (Maroa ) . * - 1 £ r ' k 1 k ; % - Football — -Under 7 Stone Taupo B defeated Maroa-Oruanhi Combined 11— nil, scoring three tries, one converted. From the kick-off Taupo attacked, keeping the Combined team penned in their own twenty-five to lead 3—0 at half-time ifrom a score by B. Trethowan. Taupo kept up the attack in the second half and tries were scored in quick succession by M. Loughlin and B. Darlington, T. Percival converting the former. T. Percival, B. Trethowan and H. Nichol were outstanding for Taupo, and B. Heke and J. Taylor for Combined. Mr T. Curham was referee. Taupo tA defeated Waitahanui by one try and a conversion, five points, to nil. This was an even game with P. Ngamotu, L. Pitiroi, T. Rameka and M. Gordine showing sound football for the winners while D. Marama, H. Thompson and K. Wall (5 stone) lacked support in the Waitahanui team. T. Rameka scored and converted his own try. Mr Ilarding was referee., , Rep. Selection Game Jh the repfesehtative selection game, maximum 8st 71bs., Taupo* YJ Combined, Taupo showed more combination and better handling to win by; Ifive tries. an.d one conversion (17 points) to ohfe'penalty gbal ( 3' points). Combined team, comprising Maroa, Oruanui and Waitahanui, packed a better scrum, wihhihg these by 18 to 7. %ut their handling left much to be desiredr and Ihe fast moving- Taupo bacvk line beneiited from this. T. Kdmeka scored hree tries. L. Pitiroi, following up a penalty kick, was i lutky with the bounce and weaved his way through three players to score, converting his own try. B. Well scored from a loose rush making the score 17 — nil. Combined team attacked over the last five minutes to score from a penalty kick taken by JL Rivers. A. Tau (Oruanui) wTas outstanding and given more ball would have been very dangerous. K. Walters (Oruanui) and J. Rivers (Maroa) also played well. For the victors T. Rameka, L. Pitiroi, M. Gordine and T. Percival showed good form. Mr Hdrding refereed. Ross Shield Reps.
