TAUPO TOWN PLANNING
Sir, — I wonder how many of the ratepayers have actually seen and studied the lay-out of Taupo's townplanning scheme? To my mind it is the most ridiculous plan anyone could think of. There are only a handful of sections available to build on in the business area and these are owned by only a handful of people. There is practically no chance of any outsider starting in business. In other words, the possibilities for expansion of the business area are totally inadequate to provide for the future of our progressive and rapidly growing community. In my opinion the block as set out in the plan should be extended to include the whole area from Tongariro Street up the Spa Road to the Hospital Corner, Kaimanawa Street to Heuheu Street, and then to Rifle Range Road and the Lake Front. The public should realise that this is a very serious question. In view of its importance to the future of Taupo's business activities, a meeting shotild be called to discuss the position before t is too late to have the scheme altered. I believe there is still time for representations to be made. Building Permits There are several other questions I would like to ventilate while I am about it. Taupo is about to become a borough, with a Mayor and Councillors, to be elected in the near future. We should have a building inspector with authority to issue permits on the spot, provided plans and specifications are in order, instead of contractors having to wait till their applications have been considered by a board of non-technical members. That is the custom in other boroughs, and should be the same here. State of Roads The state of our roads emphasises the necessity of having a foreman of works. They are in a shocking state, exposing traffic to serious risks. I hope that other readers will come forward in support of the views I have expressed above. I am, etc., Taupo, 22/7/53. J. D. McLEOD. THE TOWN LIBRARY Sir, I would like to eompliment the members of the Town Library Committee on the manner in which they have tackled their self-imposed task of restoring order and method to this important department of our public amenities. They have made an excellent start. The murderers have been collected from the various odd places where they have been hiding, the cowboys of the wild and woolly West have been mustered, the gangsters, blondes, and night clubs duly ticketed, while romance, travel and other literature of a more refined order are now more easily discoverable. As one of those who participated in the clamour for a bigger and better public library in Taupo I think it due to those public-spirited ladies and geneltmen, who. took up the burden of resuscitating the apparently dead, to express public appreciation of their etforts to date. I am, etc.,
C. J.
McKINNON.
