Town Board Meeting
The report of the recent inquiry by the Local Government Commission was considered by tbe Board, the Secretary of the Commission advising that the last date for the lodging of objections was July 27th., and that, subject to any objections, the seheme would b.e finalised thereafter, The Chairman congratulated the Town Clerk, Mr S. Torepe, on the thorougli way in which ihe had prepared the statement and statistics in support of the Boards petition. The Town Clerk was instructed to eommunicate with the Secretary for Internal Affairs with cregard to the changeover from Town District to Borough status. The Chairman said that he thought that the change could well be made at the usual time for the next election of members, subject to this being convenient from the point of view of the Board's accounts. State H^/dro Request. A letter was ffead from Mr A. Davenport, General Manager, State Hydro-electric Department, stating that the Board was not complying with the terms of its hydro-electric power license, in that three of the transformeirs in the Board's area showed very high electrical resistance, which was in excess of the maximum allowed. A letter to Mr Davenport from the Board's engineer, Mr Lloyd Mandeno, dealing with the technical factors involved, was also read. The Chairman stated that a number of other Power Supply authorities weire experiencing a similar difficulty? and that he understood that the question was to be discussed at the next Power Board Conference. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply to the General Manager 's letter ad~ vising that the Board was taking the matter up with Mr Mandeno and asking hihi to endeavour to comply with the Depairtment's requirements. It was indicated in Mr Davenport's letter that the Department could advise the Minister to sanction alteration in the amount of resistance allow"able, provided the Board could satisfy the Department that such alteration was reasonable in the circumstances prevailing in the. locality. Supplementary Power Loan. The approval by the Local Government Loans Board of the proposed supplementary loan of £37,500 for the Board's Power Scheme was reported Iby the Town Clerk. A letter from the Loans Board advised that principal repayments would be deferred for the first two years of the terrn of the loan, which would be thirty years. The necessary resolution to rais,e the loan by way of special order was passed at a special meeting held following the ordinary meeting. It was deeided that a deputation should go to Wellington, in connection with the actual raising of the loan, consisting of th,e Chairman, Mr J. E. Story, the DeputyChairman, Mr J. D. Swan, and Mr W. T. Irvine. A.C. Bath Reconstruction. The Tovm Clerk repcrted to the Bcard that the £5,000 loan moneys had now been received for tbe reconstruction of the A.C. Baths. A letter had been sent a fortnight ago to the Ministry of Works, Hamilton, enquiring as to the starting of the work, but no reply had yet been received. Members agreed that it should be pressed upon the Department that the reconstruetion was urgently needpd to be completed in readiness for the Christmas holiday season, and that an early start was therefor^ essential. The Chairman *was asked to go to Hamilton as soon as possible and confesr with the Department on the matter.
