Waihi Village on the south-western shore of the southern arm of Lake Taupo, is the traditional headquarters of the Tuwharetoa tribe. Situated on a narrow strip of land between the rocky Lake beach, with its steaming thermal springs, and the steep hillside, it is a picturesque settlement. Prominent features, as seen from the Lake, are the church with its spire, and adjacent large white Cross, and the beautiful Waihi waterfall which plunges down to the Lake shore at the northern end of the beach. The above photograph was taken from the southern and of the village, looking north along the Lake shore.
