WAIRAKEI BUS TERMINAL
LETTER TO TOWN BOARD Following* receipt of a letter from the Taupo Businessmen's Association, the Town Board discussed the matter of the Wairakei bus teirminal at its monthly meeting on June 17th. The Association wislied to s.ecure the support of the Board in its efforts to have the bus terminal established at Taupo, instead of at Wairakei. The Assoeiation believed the present set-up to bte unwarranted. It meant that Taupo ffesidents travelling north either had to wait three-quarters of an hour while through passengers lunched at Wairakei, or hire a taxi to Wairakei, and that double freight charg.es had to be paid on all paircels forwarded, oue to the Hawkes Bay Motor Co. Ltd., and the other to the N.Z. Railway Road Service. Town Board members expressed sympathy with the Association's views, and commented that dutring the last War the terminal had been at Taupo, and that an arrangement had been made with regard to farbs between the Hawkes Bay Company, which held the lic.ense to Wairakei, and the Road Service. Members expressed the opinion that if the teirminal could be situated at Taupo then, it could be now, and that ifc was ridiculous that the terminal ghould be five miles from a town the size of Taupo. The Chairman pointed Out that the Association should aacertain the dates when the licenses covering the routes conc.erned would come before the Transpcirt Authorities, and arrange to bring the matter before the Authorities. The Town Board decided to support the Association in the matteir.
