DEBUTANTES PRESENTED AT BOWLING CLUB BALL
A Memorable Innovation Despite the foitterly cold weather there was a large attendance at the Taupo Women's Bowling Club's first annual debutantes' ball, held in Rickit's Hall, Taupo, on Friday evening, June 26th. Dominant colours for the decorations carried out by the Social Committee, wer'e the Bowling Club's green and gold, with the red, white and blue * of Coronation bunting draped from the ceiling around gaily coloured balloons and repeated along the edge of the stage. Masses of greenery were interwoven with artificial gold flowers, and green and gold streamers were suspended from the top of the stage, above a bank of cotoneaster berries and green foliage surmounted by a coloured portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Impressiye Ceremony The debutantes were received by Mf J. E. Story, Chairman of the Taupo Town Board, and Mrs Story, to whom they were presented by Mrs R. 'McMillan, President of the Taupo Women's Bowling Club. It was the first occasion on which debutantes had been presented in Taupo, and the ceremony was most impressive, each giri as she entered and curtsied being aecorded a hearty^ ovation. The girls presented were: — Miss Pamela Thompson. White silk corded faille gown featuring a halter neck-line, moulded bodice and unusual inset gathering at hip-line. Miss Joyce Habib: White Swiss
hailstone net over embossed cloque with draped collar' and bouffant skirt. Miss Barbara Harnett. Ivory tulle over apricol satin, waitz length gown, with frosty white peakes of Guipure lace edging the tiny tulle yoke. Miss Naomi Chase. White Taffeta with full sweeping skirt with fringe trifrimed draping, and stole effect on the shoulders. The four girls wore mittens or gloves and carried Victorian posies of white cyclamen jonquils, r'oses, freesias and maidenhair fern. Presentations Made To commemorate the occasion a scroll was presented to Mr and Mrs Story bearing the names of the debutantes and the date of the function. An orchid spray was presented to Mrs Story, who wore a turquoise gown with sequin studded inset waist-line (Continued on Page 5)

(Continued fr'om Page 3) and silver fox furs. Mrs Story presented each debutante with a string of pearls as momento of their "coming out" ball. Mrs R. McMillan, Club President, wore a black panne velvet bodice with sequinned neck-line and full skirt of black Nottingham lace over green corded sik. Mrs D. Harnett, Secretary of the Club's Social and Ball Committee, wore black julienne crepe and scarTet spray. A popular ceremony was a presentation made to Mrs Harnett by Mrs McMillan, dn behalf of the Ladies, and Men?s Committees, in recognition of her work for the ball. Mr Story, in a short speech, complimented the club for their initiative in sponsoriiig the function for the young girls of Taupo. An important event of the eveningwas the Debutantes' Waltz, led by the debutantes and their partners. Mr J. Rowlands was Master of Ceremonies, and the music was provided by Mrs Mika's orehestra. A most enjoyable supper was provided, the tables i^epeating the green and gold decoration theme with their vases of wattle.
