TAUPO DISTRICT WAR MEMORIAL FUND
The Government subsidy, of pound for pound, on moneys raised for the purpose of establishing war memorials, is payable only on amounts raised up to end of the present nxonth? and in view of this faet a review of the present position of the Taupo District War Memorial Hall Fund will be of mterest. As a result of the Queen Carnival of 1949/1950 the sum of £4635 was raised, major iterns making up this amount being amounts raised by the tliree Qneen eandidates' ecmmittees as follows: Maori Queen, £2174; Residents ■ Queen, £1430 ; Business Queen, £697. With the Government subsidy these Queen Carnival moneys represent in round figures £9270. The Carnival organised in Taupo in Deeember and January last, uncler the auspices of the Taupo War Memorial Hall Assoeiation, as reported in the Times of March 25th last, added a further sum, in round figures, of £1.950, which? with the addition of the subsidy made a total of £3900. This amount, added to that arising from the earlier Carnival, brought the total in sight up to the sum of £13,170. With a contraet let for £14,850, the position then was that a further minimum sum of £1680 was required, without allowing for any extras, incidental expenses or the costs of furnishing the Ha]]. « With the winding up in March last of the Assoeiation? a W ar Memorial Hall Committee was set up to undertake the raising of further moneys jbefore the end of the present month, June, in order to obtain the benefit of the pound for pound subsidy. As will be seen from the Subscription List pulblished in this number of the Times , the present Committee has to date received a further sum of £227, amount* ng with subsidy to £454, and ibringmg the grand total in sight to £13,624. The amount still necessary to bring the amount available up to the contraet price alone is thus £1,226. Here it should be emphasised that the amounts already raised represent a generous response by the people of the Taupo Country to the appeal made to tliem, as well as a great deal of work on the part of members of the different orgariisations, committees and other bodies who have earried on the various campaigus for funds. Reports from other eentres show that the result s of many War Memorial campaigus have been mnch less suecessful than has been the case in Taupo. There will, however? be some w ho have not yet made a donationto the Memorial Fund, and who, n ow that the time when a subsidy isavailalble is almost at its end, will wish to do so. And there will be others, again? who have already made a donation, who will wish to make a further contribution. Every amount received ibefore Ihe end of the month will be doubled by addition of the Government subslidy. We appeal to the people of the Taupo Country for a hnaleffort to crown what has already be en done.
