ELECTRICAL WIRING OFFENCES
HOTEL OWNER CHARGED Two cases, each involving a breach oi the Electrical Wiring Regulations, were heard in the Taupo Magistrates Court 011 Friday, May 22, when James Glifford Bolger, owner of the Terraces Hotel, was charged that not being a registered electrical wireman he dicl electrical wiring in the Terraces Hotel. A similar charge was preferred in connection with work done at the Huia Milk Bar. Mr Roe appeared for the Department and Mr Morrissey for defendant, who entered pleas of guilty. Referring to the Terraces Hotel case, Mr Roe outlined the work that had been done by defendant, involving a number of wiring extensions from existing lighting points, mainly for fluorescent fittings and including the running of a line across a roadway on poles to a detached building. Mr Roe described the work as crudely done, and stated that it was potentially danger.ous. The Huia Milk Bar work was not so extensiye. For the defendant, Mr Morrissey stated that it was to be noted that the work was not actually the wiring of the building, but merely the installing of extensions. The Magistrate, Mr W. A. Harlow, S.M., stated that he would have to take a grave view of the case, and referred to the danger of fire caused by such work. There had been a wholesale disregard of the regulations and it was the worst case of its kind he could recall hearing. Defendant would be convicted on both charges. On the hotel charge he would be fined £17 10s, with costs £1 and solicitor's fee £5 5s, and on the milk bar charge he would be fined £5, with costs £1 and solicitor's fee £3 3s.
