rpHE decision of the Taupo Ratepayers' Association to take up the matter of a continuous telephone service in Taupo is undoubtedly a wise one. We understand that the matter has also been before the Businessmen's Association, and that its members considered such an extension of the present service to be desirable, but felt that, as the matter affected a much wider circle than the business community itseif, it would be better if a lead were tQ be taken bv an organisation covering a wider section of the community. The present hours are from 6 a.m. to midnight on week-days, and from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Sundays. For some time many have found the Sunday hours in partieular to be inadequate. It would seem, however, that an extension to a continuous service is more desirable than an extension of Sunday hours alone; and it is probable that such an extension does not offer any more difficulties to the Department than would a partial one. It is understood that a petition to the Department signed by telephone subscribers requesting the fuller service is the usual piocedure, and that the number of signatures required is two thirds of the total number of subscribers. The town's population, and its continuing growth, together with its increasmg business activities and its position as a holiday and tourist centre indicate that the fuller telephone service is a °uppSyneedJd Sh°Uld ^ diffiCU'ty 0btaW»* th«
