SPA THERMAL SIGHTS
WAIPIKIRANGI GEYSER The Waipikirangi Geyser, one of the thermal "sights" of interest on the bank of the Waikato River at the Spa, Taupo, recently recommenced playing, after lying dormant for some time, and the ^photograph below shows one of its typical "shots." Within a few hundred yards on the river bank, and adjacent to it, there are many types of thermal activity to be seen.
WAIPIKIRANGI GEYSER A prominent f ea ture of the area is the orifiee of the Crow's Nest Geyser, which, however, has been dormant for some time. A few years ago it played more or less regularly, ejecting its column of boiling water | up to forty and fifty feet in height. Lieut. Herbert Meade, R.N., who visited the spot in 1865, has recorded that this geyser was known as Te Wakaturou. His description of it makes it clear that his reference is to the geyser known later as the Crow's Nest. On the occasion of Meacle's visit the party cooked in a boiling spring some ducks that had been caught for him in the scrub on the river bank by one of his Maori friends, with the aid of a dog.
