Annual Taupo Meeting The annual meeting of the Taupo Branch of the British and Foreign Bihle Society was held in Rickit's Hall on Monday afternoon, May 4th, the Rev. W. H. Nicholas, of St. PauFs Presbyterian Church, Taupo, presiding. The parent society, which is inter-denominational, will celebrate in 3.954 its third jubilee. The election of officeirs resulted as follows: President, Mrs J. E, Young; Secretary, Mrs W. H. Hill, Gommittee, Mrs J. Sherwood, Mrs V, T. Fail, Mrs J. Osborne, Mrs H. B. Rickard, Mrs A. McGregor, Mrs Harnett, Mrs G. S. Anchor, Mrs C. Thomas, Mrs A. Kennedy, Mr Lash, Miss Stewart. Miss Lorna Smith, Organiser for the South Auckland area, was pxosent, and gave an interes'ting address on the work of the Society, which will celebrate its one hundred and fiftieth year in 1954. In 1804 the Seriptures were available in seventy languages only, while today they are available in eleven hundred languages. Since it foundation the Bible Society has circulated 595 million volumes of Scripture, an average of oveir ten thousand a day. In oarrying on this world-wide work the Seriptures are .not soid at prices to make a profit. Many are given away, and those sotd are sold at the cheapest rrates. The new Maori Bible, for example, is sold at about half its cost. Bibles in over twenty different languages have been distributed to those requiring them in New Zealand. A New Testament in popular demarid in New Zealand is one printed in Dutch and English. The Taupo Branch will shortly eomraence the annual canvas of the town for donations to help cartry on the Society 's work, and hope to mark the Jubilee year by record results.
