IN TAUPO NOW

We hoary old-time fishing men, Bitter and nostalgic, moan Foi* the bygone days of Taupo, when Peace primordial reigned alone, And trout of twenty pounds (no lie) Often rose to our deft-cast fly. How for those years we fret and pine When Taupo's shores were empty, wild. Now we're afraid to cast a line Lest we should hook up someone's ehild. We sigh and tell our tale of woe How river pools are spoilt, because Of thrusting blokes who do not know The old unwritten fishing laws. And crowds come here to swim and play, The camps are full. There's no space left. Speed boats roar across the bay, Of precious solitude bereft. But what's all that 'gainst health and joys For thousands ? We should bear it, Our Taupo-Heaven. Now, old boys. Let us all be glad . . . to share it.
