One of the finest rimu logs ever seen in the Taupo Country was milled recently at Taupo Sawmills Ltd., timber mill, Taupo. The tree was felled on the Pouakani Block. west of Mokai and some thirty miles from Taupo. The butt log was 25 feet in length with a diameter at the stump of over six feet, and a girth halfway along of fifteen feet. Circular in section, and without any flanges, it resembled a kauri log, and showed very little sap wood. Several old timber men stated that it was the finest rimu they had ever seen. The butt log produced 4,142 super feet of sawn timber, and the whole tree 10,830 super feet, of which 85 per cent was heart. Our photo shows the butt end of the tree and the remarkably clean and symmetrical trunk.
