WORK AT WAIOTAPU The Department of Scientifie and lndustrial Researeh has commenced surveys in the Waiotapu and Reporoa to the eommencement of the boring. for steam at those places, states the Rotorua Post. Already at Vv aiotapu seven shallow bores have been drilled close to the main T aupo-Rotorua Highway. All have been , drilled at varying distances, between surfaees rifts contaming steam vents, to establish the extent of the hot ground. To test steam resources two bores have been put down to ari average depth of 200 feet, while the! others provid'e temperature informa tion. These are drnieci -until 100 degrees Centigrade is recorded;, and in spme cases this temperature has been found. at depths of only fo.rty feet. When the data have been fully atudied the way may be clear for production bores si'milar to those at Wairakei.
