Haines Following further negofciations re land for the expansion of the District High School it is expected that a decision will be reached this month. It is also anticipated that the SchooFs 1953-54 programme Will be iinalised this month. At present one class is in the Presbyteri'an Sunday School Hall. : j. • . ■ The Headmaster reported that the School Roll stood at 380 (318 primatry and 52 secondary) . The Secondary Dept., is now entitled to a further assistant and this position will be advertised. Since its establishment in 1951 the Department has grown from a one to a three-teacher department, and next year a roll in excess of 76 is anticipated, qualifying for a fourth teacher. The SchooPs .most urgent irequirement however is a Manual Training Block with Homecrafts and Woodwork instructors for two or three days a week. This has been emphasised by the Committee over the past two years and the South Auckland Education Commission realise the need, but several practical details remain fo be overcome. The Commission has appointed Mrs E. Marshall additioixaf relieving assistant, Primary Dept., fo tree the Headmaster from class teaching. She will take Modern 3 Class (Stds. 3 & 4) which has this year been taught by Mr Osborne. The School has eleven assistants thougli now entitled to twelve. The School is fortunate in having the help of the Rev. C. G. G. Salt and Mrs T. Rutene, Waipahihi, for an hour on each Wednesday. M\r Salt is instructing a group of boys in wooclcarving, and Mrs Rutene, a group of girls in Maori handicrafts, both instructors being experts in their respective fields. If the weather holds the re-sufffacing of the school grounds hy the Town Board will be completed this week. %
