ANGLERS ANNUAL MEETING
WAITAHANUI HAS LIVE ORGANISATION * The Annual Meeting of the Waitahanui Angling Improvement Association was held at Waitahanui on Saturday February 14th. Since this organisation was formed it has proved itself a live body, and amongst other aciivities has voluntarily made and mahiti; aei wabving tracks, and erected bridges, for the benefit of anglers fishing the Waitahanui waters, whether members or not. One major effort of the Association was the restoration of a most valuable stretch of fishing water by the re-building of a breakthrough made by the river at a point known as "The Colonel's Bend," and in these and other works the Assoeiation has expended over £500. President's Annual Report. Mr O. S. Hintz, President of the Associafkm, presented the Annual Report eovering ihe year which ended pn the eve of the present fishing season. Despite the fact that a number of nam.es had to be deleted from the membership roll owing to nonpayment of subscriptions the finances were sound. During last season money had been expended I rtdiciously on track elearane and gen eral .river work, and they could still say with pride that foot access on the Waitahanui was probably better than that, on any other major river in the Taupo District. This work would continue during the present season. Negotiations Regarding Groyne.
Negotiations regarding the groyne had cecupied a good deal of time, and they had recently hacl a visit from a senior engineer of the Ministry of Works, in company with Mr Bodkin, Minister for Internal Affairs, which gave some promise of a firm decision based on expert opinion. It had happened that spring lake levels were high and the engineers had been able to obtain hydraulic data required for any decision on the future of the groyne. All relevant inforniation was being collated, said Mr Hintz, after which the engineers would be able to say whether or not the removal of the groyne was a safe and practicable proposition. They knew how that all the Association sought was the ishifting of the mouth of the river northward as far as was safe, or if removal was unsafe the modification of the existing groyne to ensure a more northerly flow of the current at the moiith. The incoming committee would have to keep this matter under review and if necessary urge decision and aetlon during the off season. Blocked Access Roads. Referring to blocked access roads the President said that one possible solution was that the Assoclation approach the Moaris both through the Land Court and their Tribal Committee, offering an annual payment, ei-ther to property owners or to the Maori community, for vehicular access rightis over the car track which traversed Maori land, on condition that the legally dedicated roads were left open to all traffic. That arrangements would have to be on a year to year basis until such time as the Government extended roading with the payrnent of normal compensation. Election of Officers. The election of executive officers and committee for the ensuing year resulted as follows: President, Mr 0. S. Hintz; Vice-President, Messrs D. Macnicol, D. McCorkindale. Committee, Messrs T. K. Butler, L. Hj' Cheaili N. A. Duthie, J. A. Howie, I. J. Hutchinson, A. Hutt, A. Jacobs, S. M. Jones, F. R. Logan J. Luxford, D. G. Moffatt, K. Murray, T. G. Nelson, F. H. Palmef, C. C. Ruby, C. R.
