TOUR OF INDIA
MRS GAWEN HOLDEN 'S VISIT - A twelve month's tour of India was completed by Mrs Gawen Holden when she flew back to New Zealand to attend her daughter Audrey's 21st. birthday party in Taupo recently. Among many places visited were Calcutta, Darjeeling, Delhi, Agra and Bombay. At the latter city Mrs Holden attended several reeeptions given for the nersonnel of H.M.N.S. "Beltona." Though temperatures averaged about ninety degrees., a contrast . was experiended when snow fel 1 in Delhi. Mrs Holden found life in India very strange but very colourfui, and a highlight of her tour was a visit to the Taj Mahal, which she described as being beautiful beyond description. On two oecasions Mrs Holden was a guest in Maharajah's homes, the splendour of these places being* breathtaking. Traxn serviees were wonderful with comfortable dining cars and superior service, and the Indian people were found to' be most hospitable. Fruit was abundant at prices fantastically low as compared with buiter at ten shillings a pound and cigarettes at the same price for fifty. Mrs Holden has a collection of souvenirs, includmg lovely saris, elaborate shoes and a host of other beautiful things.
