TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS
MONTHLY MEETING The * Chairman, Mr J. E. Story, presided over the monthly meeting of the Taupo Town Board on February 18th., when there were also present Mr J. D. Swan ( Deputy- Chairman ) , Miss K. O. Lewis, Messrs W. T. Irvine, W. G. Morris, C. J. Vedder, and K. E. Young. Matters of general interest dealt with were as foliows:R eeons t r ucti on of A.C. Raths . The local Government Loans Board advised that formal approval for a loan of £5000 for A.C. Baths recoii'F' truetion had been given on February 6, and tliat the Town Board rould now proceed by Speciar Order. The loan was to be known as the A.C. Baths Reconstruction Loan 1953, •with a term of twenty years and interest- rate of four per cent. The &eeurity rate to be struck for the loan will reqnire to be of a farthing in the £ on the unimproved value. As required by the relevant Aet a special meeting of the Board. was held followi ng the monthly meeting "when the necessary forrnal resolution authorising the requisite steps for the loan was passed. The work is to be done by the Ministry of Works, and it was left to the ehairman and Town Clerk to see the offieers of the Ministry in regard to the project. Pedestrian Crossings and Parking The Ministry of Works had advised that they would be putting another coat of sealing on the sides of the main street in March, so that the Board's projected introduction of markings for angle parking and pedestrian crossings is held up pending the completion of this work. Casualty Ward and Mortuary The Board is still awaiting infcrmation as to progress of the easualty ward at the local hospital, and as to specifications for the proposed mortuary, and it was decided to write the Waikato Hospital Board m regard to these matfers. Horses on Roads Members reported a number of complaints made to thein as to horses wandering on the roads, and cases of damage. to fences dorie by horses beiiig tethered to them. It was decided to advertise for one so that steps could be takeri to deal with the nuisance. Motutere Domain Board A letter was received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands asking for the name of the Town Roard's representative for appointment to the Domain Board to be set up to take control of the Motutere Bay Camping Ground. The Commissioner advised that the proposed Domain Board wbuld eonsist of representatives of the Land and -Survey Department, Ministry of Works, Internal Affairs Department, Taupo Town Board, Automobile Association and' three local residents. It was to be the new Board?s duty to develop fbrfcher camps on the Lake margins as required. After members had referred to the desirability of securing further information as to future camping control developments in the vicinity of the Town Board area, a resolution was passed nominating Mr W. T. Irvine as ihe Town Board representative for appointment to the new Board. Electrical Inspector's Report A report siib'mitted by Mr J. M. Sherwood, Electrical . Inspector, detailed progress of reticulation in the town distriet, and stated that service connections made now tofalled fcwenty-eighi. Interruptions to ihe power supply had been. e&used by
1 lightening storms on January 27, 28 I and 29, but the protective gear had functioned and no damage resulted. Referring to encmiries from prospective consumers as to why they eamiot be connected immediately when the lines terminate only a few chains from their properties, the report explained that it was not economical to ereet short sections of line, the norma] procedure heing to complete the whole section to the permanent termi nation or ^niakeoff," possibly a matter of several blocks-. The Town Clerk reported that applif.ations to date from intending consumers totalled 349, and that seven or eight a day had been coniing in, including u number from outside ihe Town Distriet.
