MEETING OF RATEPAYERS' ASSOCIATION

A meeting of the Committee of the Taupo Ratepayers* Association was held: at Mrs Crowther's rasidence Monday, February 9th„ when two new membtrs were welcomed^ Messrs P. Ford and L. Ward, and the following matters discussed. Tourist Agency for Taupo. The urgent need of a Tourist Bureau was the main item and after lengthy discussion it was decided to write further to Mr Bodkin, the Hon. Minister for Internal Affairs, pointing out the Assoeiation's concern at being pushed aside with the hacknej^ed phrase that "Taupo does not Warrant the establishment of a Tourist Bureau." It was fe.lt that the stage had been reached for a frank and open discussion between the Association, the Businessmen'si Association, the Town Board and the Minister. The Association was surprised to learn that the Minister had recently been in ^aupo to discuss the question of the Waitahanui rivermouth and astonishment was expressed. that the Department should consider this more important than a vital service which the Association was willing to organise on behalf of the Department. (Sealing of Spa Road. A letter had been received from the Taupo Town Board assuring the As^sociation that the Spa Road was to be sealed during the 1953/54 season. New Yaluation. The meeting decided that it would be polite to widte the Valuer- General asking the basis upon which the Taupo Town Distfict had been valued. Dumping of Logs. It had been reported that the dumping of kuge logs from trucks at the Mil! in the Oruanui Street area was causing discomfort to residents, the noise being most distressing when people were trying to snatch a few hours sleep. It was decided to approach the proper authorities to see what could be done about the nuisance. Sunday Telephone Service. The meeting decided to write the Postmaster asking for an extension cf telephone hours on Sundays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. because of the everincreasing business activity at weekends in Taupo. The present shorter service (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. only) is prcving inadequate and vviCv the increased rates and the larger number of subscribers it was considered that such an extension was absolutely warranted. Children's Playground. A vote of thanks was extended to Messrs Sinclair and Yates for the erection of the very popular swings in the Children's Playground. It is hoped that more playthings will soon be available. The Chairman (Mr J. Birnie) accorded a hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Grow^hei' and Miss Wehringo for their hospitality and the meeting I closed on a very enthusiastic note. ! I
