It is commonly supposed that the New Zealand Tuatara is a relic of the days when giant reptiles and other creatures immense size inhabited our earth in the days, ages ago, when it was a much hotter place than it is today. Our contributor "H.H." has in interesting story to tell about the Tuatara. To prevent the extinction of the Tuatara the Government Department of Internal Affairs has taken control of its preservation. During the year 1951-52 the study of the Tuatara on islands in Cook Strait was continued and there is evidence that there is a somewhat larger population on Stephens Island than was previously thought. A fence dividing Stephens Island was erected and agreement reached with the Marine Depariment regarding snaintenance and reporting on the welfare of tuataras, native frogs, and birdlife in the reserve area. Five tuatara were removed to Kapiti Island in m attempt to establish the reptiles there. South Island wekas liberated without authority on Trio Islands, and a danger to tuatara, were removed.
