TAUPO V. VISITORS AT CRICKET
HOME TEAM DEFEATED / A most enjoyable innovation whioh it is hoped will be repeated in future years was a 12 la-side match played -at the Domiain on January 11th., wihen a 'Visitors team led by D. A. Wells of Gisborne obtained a comfortable victory over the Taupo Club with five- wickets still in hand. Taupo batted first losing two quiek wickets -with only oue run on the bcxard. Forster and Collett then partly retrieved • the position by putting on 48 beflore a good catch by C'. DLxon at fine leg dismissed Forster. Late in the order F. McKean and W. Marks gave Collett consid'erable assistance and exce-pt when McKean was at the crease the latter dominated ihe scoring. His eventual dismissal came as a result of forcing the pace towards the end of the innings and his tota.1 of 90 runs included oue six and eight fours. The Taupo total of 163, though better than at one time seemed possible was not an impressive score in the prevailing eonditions. Opening the visitors Innings Clarke, a sifcud'ent from the University at Dunedin and Jacobs from Wanganui put on a bris'k 30 for tlbe first wieket. Clarke proceeded to coliect a steady 40 before he played a ball from Macken onto his wieket. Ward who is at Auckland University scored a steady 13 and then 'Wells came in to a play a hard hit innings and with the assistance of John Gilligan of Wanganui and R. Penlington of Wellington proceeded to clinch the game/for the visitors. After making the winning hit Wells was well caught by Macken at deep mid-wicket. Other visitors who took part were C. Dixon, on leavc from Duntroon who obtained two good Taupo wickets, J. Allen from Wellington, A. Slymes and J. Robson from Auckland and G. C. Wylde from Hamilton. Taupo XII 1st. innings: — A.
