Much public appreciation has been expressed at the good work done by the trafhc officers of the Transport Department during the carnival season in Taupo. We have pleasure in placing the fact on record. In clarification of an item in the report of the T'own Board's last meeting in reference to an application from Mr T. M. Kent for a permit to use a half-acre section on the Spa Road as a camping ground, Mr Kent has written to say that this application — which was declined — was made on behalf of a client. He had no personal interest in this or any otheff project of this 'nature. An adjourned meeting of the Taupo Gymkhana Club was 'held shortly hefore Christmas, but the attendance was disappointing. The only "Athletes" present weire Messr s J. E. Story, J. D. Swan, Paul Silva, W. J. Stevens, A;. Grace, and J. OToole, all of whorn considered that as they were past their athletic prime they had better go into recess. At a meeting of the r Tokaanu Volunteer Fire Brigade on December 16th, the Superintendent, Mr B. Sutherland, read the annual repo?rt. The next practice and meeting was fixed for January 6th. Owing to ex~ treme pressure on space, a fuller report of this meeting has been held over for next issue. No pinus insignis poles have been used in the power lines for the power scheme. Locally grown Oregon p!ne (Pseudotsuga taxifolia) has been used, treated with a mixture of heavy oil and pentachlorophenol, the latest method adopted by the State Forest Service for such timbers. The treatment consists of immersing the poles in a bath of the mixture, which has been heated. Locally the heat has been supplied by geothermal steam from the bore of Messrs J. W. Birnie Ltd., at the Spa Hotel, whose cooperation has been of great help to the Towrn Board. On a recent morning a complaint was made to Mr J. Story, , Town Board chairman, that a quantity of meat offal had been deposited at the Board's h'ubbish dump on the Spa Road. This practice has caused concern to the Board for some time, such matter having been dumped on a number of occasions, and often in a ! markedly offensive condition of decay. The Chairman points out that offal of this type should not be depositei at the dump, and that to do so is contrary to Health Department regulations.
