A LUCKY ESCAPE

CAE ACCIDENT ON THE NAPIER BOAD Friends in Taupo of the Misses Atkin, who have a cottage in Hinemoa Avenue, will be relieved to learn that three members of the family, the Misses Katherine, Gertrude, and Nancy Atkin, had a most fortunate escape from serious, if not fatal injury when their car in which they were driving from Taupo to their home in Napier for Christmas went bver the bank and rolled some 100 feet down the hillside before coming to rest on ifcs wheels. It was noticed in a a seryice bus coming in the opposite direction that an Austin car negoti'ating the bends had not been passed, and one of the passengers sitting near the driver remarked upon its disappearance. The bus was stopped and a search revealed the car at rest at the bottom ©f the slope. The three ladies had extricated themselves, and though thesre was no visible evidence of serious inju^y, all were suffering from shock. Arrangements were made to have them taken to the Napier Hospital where, after examination, the eldest of the three, Miss Katherine, Was considered to be in a fifc condition to be taken to her home in May Avenue, while here two kisters were admitted for observation and treatment. All three suffered contusions - and abrasions in varying degree. The car, which was a new one, suffered extensive darnage. Whai actually happened to cause the accident is not yet clear.
