TAUPO POLICE COURT
THREE MONTHS* GAOL FOR CAR CONVERSION On Monday, December 15th, the Bench at the Taupo Police Court dealt sharply with an accused convicted of the "unlawful conversion" of a motor-car valued at £700, on Sunday, December 14th. Messrs V. T. Fail and W. H. Kent, Justices, were on the Bench. Constable E. H. Rowlands, who conducted the case for the police, said that accused, when arrested, refused to give information as to the whereabobts of the car, which was discovered next day in the vicinity of the mill at Maroa, damaged to the estimated extent of £30. Fonoti was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour. The Bench, taking a serious view of the case,\ remarked that at this season of the year it was necessary that the visitors who would be in Taupo in large numbers — the population would be temporarily doubled or trebled — for the holiday season should be protected as far as possible from car-converters. For a small community like Taupo this class of offence threatened to become more extensive unless sharply dealt with by deterrent punishment. It was hoped that the present instance would be a warning to others to respect people's property.
