Tragedy stalked a deer-stalking party on the Desert Road some ten miies south of Turangi on- Sunday, November 30th. last, when a young Maori, William Te Waa, was shot with fatal results. He was with four companions, and the party had only one rifle. An inquest was formally opened for purposes of identification, and then adjourned sine die. Proceedings will probably be resumed in a fortnight/s time.
★ As conditions were not favourable for closing the dam and filling the lake-bed at the Hatepe Hydro-Elec-tricity project last week, action was postponed over the week-end, with the possibility in view of carrying out the job on Monday or Tuesday of this week, according to conditions. ★ The annual meeting of the Taupo Branch of the Community Arts Service will take place at Rickit's Hall on Monday, December 15th., at 2.30 p.m. ★ As advertised elsewhere, a public meeting of the Taupo Girls' Marching Association is to be held at Rickit's Hall tonight, December 10th., when the draft constitution will be submitted for approval. ★ Last week's front-page picture "Sunset oh Lake Taupo" was reproduced from a photograph by T. B. Ambrose, of Hamilton, not tG. Anchor, as stated in error.
★ In the paragraph of last week's issue referring* to the public meeting called by advertisement to be held on Monday, December 15th. to diseuss the proposed ramp at Two-Mile Bay it was inadvertently stated that the locale of the meeting was to be Rickit's Hall. It should have read Rainbow Grillrooms, as stated in ihe advertisement. .X ★ As previously arranged, the marching girls of the Taupo Guides Company were to have visited Rotorua on Saturday, November 29th., to take part in a march and maze events. The project had 'to be abandoned on receipt of a telegram advising that the programme had been cancelled. The rain did it. A new date has not yet been arranged. ★ An error in the printing of the last paragraph of a letter to the Editor on the subject of "Stray Horses" in our issue of December 3rd. may possibly have been construed as a reflection on the Magisterial Bench. As printed, the sentence read: "If the public condemn such cruelty to animals the local magistrary may not do so." This should have been printed "If the public condone .... ★ Four members of the Awanui Marching Team of the Taupo Girl Guides- — Ti 11 Wood, Keren Reid, Beth Snooks and Maadi Hough- — accompanied their Captain (Mrs Peart) on a four-day visit to Te Awamutu last week-end to attend a big marching competition and learn by observing the performances of the various teams. A song and dance recital — a leading event in Te Awamutu, was also one of the pje'asures in store.
