WAR MEMORIAL HALL CAMPAIGN

ASSOCIATION EXECUTIVE MEETING At an executive meeting of the War Memorial Hall Association held at ihe office of Mr Ben Armstrong on Monday, November 7th., there were present Mr W. Stevens (chairman), Mrs K. Reid, Messrs C. Vedder, I. Logan, E. Wright, B. Armstrong, Col. Barton, the Organiser and the Secretary. Apologies from Mrs Kent, Miss Wehringo, Messrs B. Sinclair and E. Taylor, were reeeived.

The Treasurer reported total in hand including wrorking expenses, £601 19/9. Catering. — As no tenaers were reeeived from -local firms the Committee decided to approaeh organisations on the General Committee to i run the catering on bqhalf of the I Carnival, the catering to consist of I Pies, Bread and butter, sandwiches, tea, soft drinks, 'and hot water. Speed Boat Day. — The Motor Boat and Aquatic Sports Club advised through Mr Taylor that if 6 loads of shing-le could be dumped at the side of the groin all boats could be launched there. It was arranged that the Chairman, Mrf Stevens, finalise this matter with Mr Taylor and Mr Hall of the Internal Affairs DeDepartment, the Taupo Town Board having already reeeived permission from Mr Macnamara for thc- boats to use that part of the Lake for launching purposes 011 December 26th., Mr Logan to arrange with the carriers about the shingle being carted.

Fly Casting. — It was idecided to drop this as far as the Carnival was concerned as there didn't seem to be sufficient interest shown. Card Evening. — Owing to the fact that another meeting was being held on Tuesday, November 25th., it was arranged that Mrs Birnie's card evening in aid of the Hall funds be held on Monday, November 24th. Helpers during the carnival. — As no names of helpers had been reeeived from any of the kindred Associations it was decided to call a full committee meeting and also to invite any one who is prepared to help to attend. This meeting will be held in Rickit's Hall on Monday, December 1st. Maori Day. — An apology was reeeived from Mr Arthur Grace, who advised that Mrs Reid would act on hisb ehlaf. He suggested that a tentative programme for the Maori Day be supplied and that would publice same. The following .tentative programme was sugggested: 10 a.m., Hakas, Action Songs, Poi Bance, Stick Game, all in competition between the children attending the sehools at Tokaanu, Turangi, Waitahanui, Taupo, Oruanui, Mokai, etc. 12-1 p.m., Hangi. 2 p.m., Races — 25 yards for boys and girls under 8; 50 yards for boys and girls under 12; 50 yards for boys and girls under 14; 100 yards for boys and girls under 14; Three legged race for girls under 14; Sack race for boys under 14. ' Adults. — Hakas, Action Songs, Poi Dance; in competition between teams from — Tokaanu, Turangi, Waitahanui, Taupo, Oruanui, Mokai, Nukuhau, etc. It was suggested that tug-o'-war eould be arranged between the various Maraes and villages, and that Mr Arthur Grace be asked to write out the above programme in Maori for publication in the paper and at the same time ask the various pas and maraes to co-operate and thus help to make the day a success.

Organisers Report. The Organiser reported as fo.1lows : — Transport. — That ihe Road Services and Hawkes Bay Motors had been given details regarding the Carnival and asked if they were prepared to put on special ibuses if the demand warranted. Mr Redding of The Hawkes Bay Motors had suggested the Executive approaeh Mr Bridgens of Turangi who was the Proprietor of the school buses (which

• \ could be used over the Carnival pericd), to ascertain wliether he was prepared to run a serviee, and thus obviate a bus running empty from Taupo. Surprise Packets. — The matter of ordering these was left in the hands of the Organiser. National Dancing. — The Organiser reported on his visit to the dancing competitions at Mangakino and submitted a full programme for January lst., which was approved, 200 copies to be printed and circularised among the Dancing Organisations. He a.lso reported that arrangements had been made for articles and goods for Quick Raffles and his action was approved.

At least 2 marques he pointed out, would be reauired for the various ccmpetitors and teams to change in and structures would have to be erected for catering, soft drinks and various stalls to ,be used in conjunction with the Carnival. He was authorised to make the necessary arrangements for these in consultation with Mr Vedder. Mr Stevens promising to arrange with the Putaruru Transport for Tarpaulins. Power and Lighting. — The Organiser was authorised to approaeh Mr Buckleigh and the Ministry of Works and discuss the question of this matter in event of an emergency. Fancy Dress Parade. — It was movcd and seconded that the following Organisations be approached to assist the procession N by parading, namely, The Fire Brigade, >St. John Ajmbulanc|, (Marchingl Teams, Girl Guides anf Boy Scouts. It was also moved and seconded that the Carriers Association be approached and asked for their co-operation in arranging for carriers to decorate trucks, and floats.

Orchestras. — It was moved and seconded that Mr Habib and the Mika's be approached regarding the supplying of the orchestra for the various dances. Aquatic Sports: Swimming. — Owing to the very heavy programme that the executive had in hand it was suggested that residents of Taupo who were interested in swimming and were prepared to help should be asked to send their names in to Mr Swan, the Organiser, so that a sub-committee could be formed to run this day which is being held on December 29th. The next Executive meeting* will be held at 7.30 on Tuesday, November 25th., at Mr Armstrong's Office. ORGANISERS NOTES Rattles: There will be official raffles running in connection with the Memorial Hall scheme which have all been authorised by the police and will be drawn under police supervision: — 1. — The Butchers Christmas Hamper Raffle — lst. Prize: Ham, Turkey, Leg of Lamb. 2nd» prize: Chicken, Duck, Leg of Lamb; 3rd. Prize: Cricken, Roast of Beef. The tickets will be on sale in Price's and Smith's Butcheries.

2. — The Grocers Christmas Hamper. There will be a separate raffle in each of the following stores: Cassons, Haynes, Kilford's, Moris. Taupo Sfores, and RusselTs and the prizes at each store will be — lst. £4. Groceries; 2nd. £2 Groceries; 3rd. £1. Groceries. It would be possible for one person to win 6 lst. prizes, because as mentioned above each store is running a separate raffle. 3. — Combined Shops Christmas Raffle: 15 prizes to the total value of £25. Tickets for this raffle will be sold in all shops other than those mentioned above. It is pointed out that the cost of the prizes will be supplied by the Association and not by the various shops concerned. The sale of these tickets is subject to the various shop-keepers agreeing. \ny other raffle tickets on sale beLween this and the end of the Carnival except those sold entirely in any hall or building and drawn on he day of sale in tha+- place will have been authorised by the Carnival Committee. Ihe police nave also

given a permit for the running of Quick Raffles which will be conducted from time to time at various functions. If the Committee decide at a iater date to run any further raffles, notice to that effect will be published in tl>e paper. Gooclwin Marionette Theatre. — With the results of many inquiries we have pleasure in advising that the above will be giving performances during the Carnival period, at a place and time to be notified later. Wcrking Bee: We have to thank all those who sent in their names as willing to help with the construction of the Hall. As the Contractor is not quite ready to start on the building, we would be obliged if those who have submitted their names, would help us with the erection of refreshment stalls, soft drink stalls, etc. and the Organiser will communicate with all the volunteers at a later date, giving time and place.

Decorated Vehicle Parade: We have been advised that the Taupo Town Board, The Business Men's Association and the St. John Ambulance Association and Fire Brigade will be putting in a decorated float or vehicle. This we hope will be a lead to motor-car and truek owners and to other Organisations.

GENERAL MEETING. As advertised elsewhere a meeting of the General Committee of the Memorial Hall Association has been convened for Monday, December lst., at Rickit's Hall, at 8 p.m., to discuss final arrangements for the carnival.
