TIRAU-WAIRAKEI STATE HIGHWAY
STATEMENT BY MAIN HIGHWAYS BOARD The position regarding the TirauWairakei State Highway has been officiaily explained in a letter addressed to Mr C. S. Currie, Secretary, Taupo Businessmen's Association by the chairman of the Main Highways Board (Mr R. Trevor Smith) dated Novemher 7th. "The importance of this route" says Mr Trevor Srnith, is fully appreciated and the Main Highways Board has'in view a progressive programme of improvements. A survey is at present iheing carried out covering realignment of the section of highway in the vicinity of Oruanui, and it is hoped that it will be possible in the near future to commence construction work in this locality. After completion of this work the section between Oruanui and northwards to Atiamuri will be realigned and reconstructed, as re. sources permit. "It is anticipated that the length immediately north of the Waikato River Bridge at Atiamuri to the start of the existing seal, will be sealed this sumrned. As you are aware the surface of this highway — being of pumice, varies from day to day with weather and traffic conditions, but every endeavour is made to maintain it to a reasonable standard. "Regarding your Association's request that this route be declared a Main Highway, I would point out that it was declared a Main Highway on October 10th., 1940, and on April 1st., 1948, was elassified as a State Highway."
