WAR MEMORIAL HALL ASSOCIATION

EXECUTIVE MEETING ■■At a meeting of the Taupo War Memorial Association, held at the office of Mr B. Armstrong on November 3rd., there were present: Mr •W. J. Stevens (Chairman), Miss Wehringa, Mesdames, K. Reid, S. Xent/ Messrs €. Vedder, I. Logan E. Taylor; Messrs E. Wright and B. Armstrong (joint treasurers); Miss Colbeck (secretary), and Mr.J. D. Swan (Organiser). An apology was received from Mr B. Sinclair. The treasurer reported total in hand including working expenses, of £535 16/9. iSeicretary. — Three applrcations were received for the position of | secretary to replace Mrs Kent, | whose resignation, on account of pressure of business was received with regret. Miss Colbeck was ap-p-ointed to fi-11 the vacancy. Organisers Report. — -The organiser reported that he had arranged with Mrs Lee of Cambridge to hold National Dancing on January 1st,. the dancing to include Highland Fling, Sword Dance, Irish Jig, Sailors Hornpipe etc. This was conformed by the committee.

Raffles. — The Organiser also reported that he had interviewed the police at Rotorua regarding raffles to be held in connection with The War Memorial Hall Carnival and the following have been authorised subject to the various shop keepers agreeing to co-operate: A Christmas Hamper to be run in conjunction with the Butchers of a turkey, ham and lamb; Christmas Hamper to be run in conjuetion with the grocers, 1st. prize £4, Groceries, 2nd. prize £2, Groceries, and 3rd, prize, £1 Groceries. Combined general Raffles to be run in conjunction with all other shops in Taupo, fifteen prizes to the value of £25. Quick raffles were also authorised and will be held on specified dates in conjunction with various functions to be held. The Organiser submitted the police application forms which are to be filled in and returned to the police for their official authority.

Printing. — The following were approved — Quarto and foolscap letter paper with printed letter heads and envelopes; 400 posters covering the programme from December 20th. to January 4th. 200 posters for the National Dancing, 100 for the Maori Day, 100 for the swimming sports, 100 for Speed Boats, and 100 for the Marching Teams. Tickets for Quick Raffles and General Raffle Tickets; 3,000 programmes consisting of 20 pages plus the outside cover. %t was suggested that advertise- I ments should be solicited for the j programmes and Mr Stevens was of the bpinion that the Businessmen's Association woulcf be prepared to do the canvassing for the advertisements anjd programmes. Catering. — The various catering firms in Taupo had been written to and asked if they were prepared to tender for the refreshments rights on the 26th., 27th., 29th., December, and 1st. and 2nd. February. As no replies had been received it had been decided to ?/ leave this matter in abeyance until the%next meeting.

Speed Boat Day. — Because the residents were protesJting against the launehing jetty being erected at Two Mile Bay, the Taupo Motor Boat and Aquatic Sports Club advised that their club had decided to hold the Speed Boat racing at Acaeia Bay. There was some discussion on this matter and it was pointed out that the business people of Taupo had expressed a desire for the races to be held as near the main street as possible. It was desired that The Taupo Motor Boat and Acquatic Club be approached to hold their races in the Waterfront if the weather conditions were fav- » ourable, and use the tracks they have at Two Mile Bay for launehing purposes in the river and that Mr Allan Hall be approached regarding this matter. Public Liability Insurance. — The Motor Boat Club advised that they

i had ahvays taken out insurance of this nature on their sports day. It was decided that Public Liability be taken out on Speed Boat Day. Maori Day.— On December * 27th., Mrs Reid and the Organiserf reported that they had visited all schools from Taupo to Waihi to make preliminary arrangements for the schools to enter Haka Action Song and Stick Game Teams. The residence at these points had been approached regarding Senior Haka and Action Song Teams being entered together with Tug-of-war from the various Maraes. It had also been arranged for Mr Arthur Grace ! to write a letter in Maori to the Taupo Times covering the various competitions. This letter was published in last week's issue. Pipers for the National Dancing and Girls Marching Teams. — The Secretary had been instructed to write to the Tauranga Pipe Band to ascertain whether they could supply pipers and drummers for the above. I It was suggested that a Fly Casting Competition be held on the same day as the Clay Bird Shoot and the Organiser was asked to report on this matter.

Rummage Sale. — l"c was reported that the Women's Institute were arranging to run a rummage sale in Rickit's Hall on Thursday, December 11th. All proceeds to be given to The War Memorial Hall Fund. Card Evening. — The Committee eccepted Mrs Birnie's generous offer to hold a card evening in aid of the Hall funds and it was decided to hold | this on Tuesday, November. 25th. Next Meeting. — The next meeting of the executive will be held .on Mondav, November 10th., at Mr Armstrong's Office at 7.30 p.m.

,0 1 \G AN IS ER5 S NOTES^ Erection of Hall. — As reported elsewhere the Town Board has accepted tender for the erection of the Hall. The successful tender er has advised that he will be pleased to make use of the voluntary workers for the carting of shingle and sand, and also for their assistance with the foundations and stacking of timber . All voluntary work done will be a cash credit to the War Memorial Hall Fund and will qualify for a £1 for £1 subsidy. The successful tenderer, Mr Ward, will advise from time to time when such voluntary work can be used.

Women's Institute Rummage Sale. • — Will residents please bear the Rummage Sale in mind and look out any surplus old clothing, furniture, books etc. Whidh they wish to dispose of. The War Memorial Hall Committee will make arrangements | to pick up any of the above things I for the various residents prior to the Rummage Sale. National Dancing Competitions. — The Hall Committee is providing all medals and judges for these competitions at a cost of £35. As it is hoped to make the National Dancing an annual event in Taupo, the Organiser would be pleased to hear j from anyone interested in National Dancing and would be prepared to donate cups or trophies to be competed for annually.

Guy Fawkes Night. — The Organiser would like to thank the Taupo Fire Brigade for their excellent work on this occasion and their donation of £7 towards the cost of the fireworks. As reported elsewhere the net proceeds from this evening to the Hall Fund was £23 3/-. He would also like to thank the iSt. John Ambulance who were in attendance at that occasion and the Boy Scouts for their very excellent help. Maori Day. — Saturday, December 27th. Mrs K. Reid and the Organise will be visiting schools north of Taupo during this week to arrange for Junior Haka, Action Song and Stick Game Teams to compete on this day . Raffles. — The official raffles will be drawn on December 20 th. under police supervision. Full particulars of these will be published later and the Committee, desire to point out that only those raffles published by the Hall Committee are sanctioned by them and the police . Helpers. — It will be realised that

\ to run a large programme as outlined above the committee will require a large number of voluntary helpers and any Organisation or individual who can assist as gate keepers, ticket sellers, judges, race officials *etc. are asked to send their names in to the Organiser stating on what days their assistance would be available. Programme for the Carnival. The following is the tentative prqgramme between Saturday 20th. December and Sunday 4th. January subject to final confirmation from sorne of the Organisations concerned. Saturday, December 20thi : Girl Guides Concert and drawing of the raffles. Monday, December 22nd.: Taupo Dramatic Society presentation of Blithe Spirit. Tuesday, December 23rd.: R.S.A. Father Christmas Party for children. WTednesday, December 24th.: Back to Childhood Dance. Friday, December 26th.: Speed Boat Racing. Dance in the evening.

Saturday, December 27th.: Maori Day. , Monday, December 29th.: Swimming* Carnival, Aquatic Sports, Beauty Parade Performance of Blithe Spirit in the evening. Tuesday, December 30th: Taupo Golf Club Open Tournament. Performance of Blithe Spirit in, the evening. Wednesday, December 31st.: Paddy's Market, Quick Raffles, Mock Court, Afternoon; Baby Show, Evening: Fancv Dress Ball. Thursday, January 1st.: National Dancing*, Surprize Packets. Evening: Childhood Fancy Dress Balh Friday, January 2nd.: Fancy Dress Parade: decorated motor cars, trueks, cycles, prams. Juvenile Sports, Girls Marching Teams Display. Saturday, January 3rd.: Hard Up Ball. Sunday, January 4th.: Taupo Bowling Club's Open Tournament. The Memorial Hall Committee hopes that the residents and visiters to Taupo will co-operate in the above programme and it Is suggested that they should start to prepare or think about some of the above events particularly The Fancy Dress Ball, Tne Children's Fancy Dress Ball, ihe decorated cars, trueks, cycles etc. and costumes for the parade.
