Identities of the Early Days-Te Kooti
v.--In his reminiscences of "Old Taupo Hotels and Identities/' published in
last week's issue of the Times, Mr Howard Hill made a passing reference to the Maori warriordeader, Te Kooti, which revived interest in that personalsty of the early days of colonising in New Zealand. The photographs printed here are of Te Kooti and his wife, published in the literature of the Polynesian Society (Extract from Vol. 55, March 1946). According to this aufhority several pictures purporting to be the iikenesses of Te Kooti had been collected, some of which were reproduced by people who knew him in the flesh. There appears, however, to be a fairly general agreement that the above were authentic Iikenesses. The pen-and-ink sketch of Te Kooti was the work of Mr Hill's father, a friend of the old warrior. It was drawn by his permission while sittiitg on horseback, and shows the hand from which the fingers were shot off, as related in Mr Howard Hill's article.
