LOSS TO THE MAORI PEOPLE
We extend to our readers of the Maori race in the Taupo Country our sympathy with them in the loss they have sustained in the passing of the Princess Te Puea. The deceased lady was in every sense of the word the embodiment of wise leadership; and her influence extended over the entir'e Maori people in New Zealand and her career and works have been fully recorded in the daily Press and space does not permit of recapituration. The Maori leaders of the older generation are passing with the years, and with them the personal association with the ancient traditions of the race. The Taupo Maori Community has sustained the loss of Mrs Hemi Pitiroi, who died suddenly while attending the funeral rites of the late Princess Te Puea. Can the traditions of history and culture survive the passing of the older generation of the Maoris ? It may be hoped so.
