TAUPO TENNIS CLUB
The opening of the Taupo Tennis Season which was held at the Tennis Courts on October 5th., was well attended. Perfe-t weather added to the success of ihe day and playprs attended Ifreshly attii|ed iix whites. The President, Mr I. Strange, in his opening speecih, addressed words of encouragement to the club for the coming season. Knock-out Combined Doubles were p.layed instead of the Yankee Tournament originally intended and R standard of tennis was displayed. An exciting final match between B, Walters and R. George against S« George and J. Mclvor resulted in a well-deserved win of 9-7, for the latter couple.. Thanks are due to those ladies who served a delightful afternoon tea. Among the /visitors present for afternoon tea were: — Mrs K. Reid, (our local photographer), Mrs G„ Anchor, and Mrs D. Baker. At present the Taupo Tennis Club has 21 affiliated members. A committee meeting held at the Sports Depot on October 3rd. decided tihat people who are non-members but who would like to play, will be charged 2/6 a set. However club members will be given preference over non-members in the use of the courts. Mr D. Baker was also elected as Vice-Captain. After the fine tennis displayed on the Opening Day a committee meeting was held on October 9th. to decide the ladder ratings as well as the tennis roster for the season. The ladder ratings are as follows : —
Women. — B. Walters. S. George. W. Hurae. R. Anchor. B. Sutton. H. Livesey. M. Fulljames. M. Brown. M. Rickit. L. Sutcliffe. D. Rimmer.
Men. — I. Strange. J. Mclvor. T. Smith. D. Baker. G. Pearse. R. George. B. Davis. H. Ericson. II. SvenseiHo J. McLeodo B. Chadwick.
Challenges will be open for the first two weeks beginning from October 12th., but after that challenges will be restricted to, two above. Umpires will be compulsory. Intending players are again reminded to get in touch with, (President), Mr IStrange, Taupo Bank; (Patron), Mr Baumberg, Sports Depot; (Secretary - Treasurer), Miss B. Walters, Taupo High School. Although inter^cluh matches will begin next month the committee will arrange matches for those people 'nteres^ed in playing during the week-ends. On the 15th. November, the Taupo Tennis Club will be holding its first dance at the RickiFs HalL Tickets will be sold at 2/6 (ladies), 3/^ (men), and 6/- (double). An excellent band and a good supper will be provided. The following names should have been included in the list of vieepresidents in last week's issue bf the Taupo Times: — Messrs J. Birnie, C. P.
