GIRLS' MARCHING TEAMS

Sir, — In reply to Mr Stevens in your issue of October lst.: Referring to yonr report dated August 2Lth., in which Mr Stevens states I would have nothing to do with the Girl Guides or the Association. This is definitely not eorrcet, If Mr Stevens would care tc , chc.ck on my aetivities in support of the Girl Guides r.i-a the Marcaing Assoeiation he would think twice ahout wasting valuable space. . . . Referring to report dated September 7th., may I ask Mr Stevens: When has it become necessary for members of the Marching Club, to get permission from the Chairman of the Memorial Committee to hold their own meeting. Mr Stevens will remember he was allotted the little hall ky Miss Rickit to hold his own meet- j ing arranged by him personally with members of the Bay of Plenty Centre. «, . . Mr Hampton asked personally if they could enter our meeting after our business was eompleted. A resolution was passed admitting the members of the Bay of Plenty and various other members of local organisations. In ooncluding I wrish to appeal to members of all local organisations to fhelp | within their own bounds and leave other organisations alone. If this is done a better spirit will be created among various organisations, Taupo will be a much improved town, and every organisation will flourish. I am, etc., PAUL SILVA. fNote: — Parts of the above letter have been deleted. Correspondents may pass comment, but must refrain from personal reflections on others. — Editor.] THE WAY OF THE CUCKOO Sir, — In reply to Mr Livesay's letter ia last week^s issue of the Taupo

Times, I have heard of two instances wifntssed in New Zealand of the Shining Cuckoo carrying an egg in its throat and depositing it in another bird's nest. Another authority, Hutton and Drummond, in the book "Animals of New Zealand" quotes a case witnessed in Kent where a pair of robins successfully repulsed a Cuckoo's attempt to place an egg in their nest by this means. Mr Livesay may have seen - one i species of Cuckoo laying an egg in the entrance of a nest but is it un- | reasonable to suppose that amongst j the 176 remaining species there are not other methods employed to convey the egg K.o a de,siarble nest, •otherwise inaccessible for laying purposes? As regards ihe tiny hooded nest of the Grey Warbler I doubt if it would be possible for the Shining Cuckoo to lay an egg in the entrance. However, perhaps the bird watchers of Taupo may be able to solve this probiem during the next few weeks when Pipiwharauroa will, no doubt, be busy searching for a suitable nest in which to lay (?) or disposit (?) her egg. I am, etc.,
