TAUPO WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
NINETEENTH BIRTHDAY PARTY A large gathering of members attended.the Taupo Women's Institute's 19th birthday party on Tuesday, September 16. Mrs E. Glass, president, spoke a few words of welcome to the guest s. Mrs Clayton, president of the Roto* xua Federation, then addressed the gathering on the aims of the Women's Institutes and stressed the point of their infruence in fostering peace and kindnesses to one another, ending her short speech on the note: "Would God not let us forget to be kind," from the eoncluding line of the Institute dedication. Mrs Clayton and Mrs Glass were each presented with a Victorian posy. Mrs Clayton travelled through from Rotorua in the morning and was Mrs Glass's guest for the night. Four members from the Kaingaroa State Forestry Women's Institute were guests at the birthday party: Mrs Scannell, president; Mrs Wheeler, Mrs Horton and Mrs Dennis, all oi whom expressed their pleasure at an enjoyable afternoon. Mrs Scannell was presented with a spray.
A number of congratulatory telegrams and letters were received from various Women's Institutes, Broadlands, Waipa, Minganui, Waikato East Federation; also from Mrs J. Taylor, vice-president, who was absent. Three short sketches were enacted hy Institute members, "Sandy." "The Surprise" and "Lost False Teeth." Members taking part were Mesdames F. Fletcher, J. Taylor, W. Osborne, E. Tierney and Miss McClymont, The sketches were short, very amusing, and well aeted. Mrs Clayton remarked that she was quite taken by the way the actresses spoke clearly for all to hear. All those who parfook in the plays wrere presented with spray s. Mrs G. Mecher sang. A delightfui afternoon tea was supplied by members. The huge ! birthday cake wTas baked bv Mrs K. Smith and decorated by Mrs Stowe. Three members of long standing, Mesdames Gradwell, Tierney and Reed, blew out the candles together. The bowl of spring flowers' competition was won by Mrs McClymont, with Mrs Stowe second. * ir « ■#.
TAUPO MAORI MISSION The Rev. W. T. F. Skey, L. Thu, who has been appointed to take charge of the Taupo Maori Mission District, was indueted at the Maori Mission Ghurch, Nukuhau, Taupo, on Sunday, September 14th, by the Bishop of Aotearoa, the Rt. Rev. R. N. Panapa. There has been no residential clergyman at Nukuhau since the .latter became Bishop of Aotearoa. Following the service of induction Holy Communion was celebrated by tihe Rev. H. Rangiihu, assisted by the Rev. T. Tuhi wai. In Ms address, Bishop Panapa stressed ■ that though there had been Maori clergy in charge of the Mission District for a long time, the appointment of a pakeha priest was not a new development, and referred. to the work of early pakeha clergy, and in particular to the Rev. T. Grace, the pioneer missionary of Poukawa. Reception to Bishop Lesser. Bishop Lesser wTill be in Taupo on Monday, iSeptember 29th. A reception will be held for him at Rickits Hall at 3.30 p.m. There will be a eonfirmation service at St. Andrew's Church,. He will leave for Napier ; the following day. Rev. Skey formerly of Tolaga Bay who was recently indueted at Rukuhau has been attending the Maori Synod at Whakatane. He returned Monday, September 22,
' A Acknowledging the cheque for £44 7/4 handed over by Mr J. D. Swan as the result of the Taupo street collection effort on behalf of the New Zealand Crippled Children Fund, the secretary of the Rotorua Sub-Centre, Mr H. B. Curtis conveys from his branch grateful thanks to Mr Swan, the collectors, and the people of Taupo who gave so generously. "We wotild also like," he adds, "to thank the 'Taupo Times' for the ad/ertising connected with the appeal." * * * 1 Last week the Taupo Boy Scouts devoted their activities to instruction in first aid, under the guidance of *|taure Edlin. Three fbf the boys eompleted their tenderfoot test and are ready for enrolment. * % * Captain Peart, of the Taupo Girl Guides, visited Auckland recently and returned with fresh ideas from other countries. Brown Owl Thompson is ready to enrol Brownies from the age of seven to ten years.
V -F- ^ Mrs Baty, of Taupo, who is a daughter of the late Mr Charles Jessip, of Te Moana, Geraldine, did sketching of Allied servicemen as a voluntary war effort. She sketched more than 700 servicemen during that time. The American Red Cross gave her a studio at its club in Wellington, and later she carried on her work at the reereational hut at the Wellington Hospital and at the servicemen's hospital in Rotorua. She has recently be asked by a member of the Executive of a big American business firm for a painting of typical New Zealand scenery. * * * A young New Zealand singer, Betty Erickson, went to Australig a month or so »ago to try his luck with the major broadcasting networks. Only six days after his arrival he was engaged as a guest I artist in the Australian Broadcasting Commission's Hit Parade, Erickson, who has broad^ast in Auckland and appeared in Auckland cabarets, recently recorded a number of songs for a New Zealand recording concern — "New Zealand has tenor." * ❖ * While an elderly man named Charlie Tahau, of Hawkes Bay, was bathing in the A.C. Baths he suffered a stroke and collapsed. Fortunately one of his daughters was ! able to extricate him and with the subsequent services of the caretaker of the baths, IMr Harding*, was taken off by the ambulance to Rotorua Hospital. He was later taken fco his home in Hastings.
