SPRING FLOWERS ON SHOW

TAUPO HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY The Taupo Horticultural and Bfeautifying Society's Spring Show was a great success, the quality of the exh,ibits Teaching a very high standard, as visitors comparing their impressions with others they had seen freely admitted. There was a good attendance. At a suhsequent auction of the exhibits bids went from 3/6 to as high as 7/6 in many cases, & as a net result the Society was able to hand the sum of £32 to the Taupo Times subscription List for the War Memorial Hall Fund. The Taupo Horticultural Society 's Challenge Cup, valued at £15 15/ - was awarded to Mr G. F. Colbeck, and hints on culture, (applause). He who scored an impressive number of "firsts." Dr Thomas' Challenge Trophy was won by Mr Alan Pye. The Children^ exhibits wTere of superior merit, and the Girl Guides' display was outstanding. Mrs Peart as Show Seeretary was efficient and helpful. Addressing those present at the opening of the show, the President (Mr Colbeck), said that Mrs Van Veen, of Putaruru, had unfortunately been prevented by indisposition from attending as adjudicator, and the Society was indebted to the services rendered in that capacity at short notice by Mrs Corbell and Mr George, of Rotorua. Mr Colbeck went on to say that the Society was anxious to give practical encouragement and assistance to young gardeners, and he himself would be pleased to cooperate with a donation of bulbs, and hints on cu-lture, (applause). He chen called on the Ghairman of the Town Board, (Mr J. E. Story), to open the show. Mr Story, in a few brief remarks weJoomed those present, and deciared the show fonnally opened, Prize List. Ihe prize list is as foilows: — - DAFFODILS. National Daffodil Society Class (12 blooms, distinct, at least three divisions, in 4 vases) — G. F. Colbeck 1, L. Stephenson 2, Mrs Peart 3; 12 varieties, 3 of each, at least 4 divisions, for Society 's Challenge Cup: G. F. Colbeck 1, L. Stephenson and F. Colson 2 (a tie); Mrs Peart 3. Six varieties, one of each: G. F. Colbeck 1, L. Stephenson 2, Mrs Peart 3. Amateur classes, 12 varieties, one stem of each, for Dr Thomas' Challenge Trophy: Alan Pye 1, L. Stephenson 2, G. F. Colbeck 3. In the single bloom classes firsts were awarded to Mrs Peart (5), MeKeene (1), L. Stephenson (1), Alan Pye (1); seconds to Alan Pye (2), Mrs Peart (1), R. H. Ward (1); third to L. Stephenson, Mrs Peart scored the points prize. In the 3-bloom class G. F. Colbeck scored a first and the points prize. Novice Class, 6 varieties: .Miss R. McKelvie 1, Mrs Arnold 2. Miss McKelvie was awarded the points prize. Children class: Barbara Watson scored 3 firsts, and was awarded the prize of five bulbs, valhed at £1 1/-, donated by Mr and Mrs Mocre-Jones. Becorative classes (open): Mrs

Smyrk lr Miss Tompkins 2. Children^ classes (posy, buttonhole, vase, sand saueer, shoulder spray and sand Tray Garden) : Cicley Taylor 1, Barbara Watson 2. The winner was awarded the £1 1/- prize donated by Mr and Mrs Moore-Jones to Girl Guides. The second prize was 10/-. Sand Garden (open to Girl Guides cnly: Patricia Thomas 1, and prize of 10/- donated by iMr J. D. Swan; Beth Snooks 2 and 5/- donated by Mr Rex Beale; Barbara Watson 3. Other Awards. Bulbs (open classes): Mrs G. F. Colbeck 1, Mrs L. Stephenson 2. Pot Plants, Shrubs, etc.: Mrs King 1. Cut Flowers (own grown): Mrs Logan, Mrs Stitson, Mrs Rewi, Miss Kelvie and Mr Duthie, tied, 3 points each. Mrs Stitson (1), and Miss McKelvie (2), drew for first and second place. v
